Information for Doctors

Ezidive teach PADI dive courses including the Open Water Diver and Junior Open Water Diver.

A diving medical (within 12 months) is required for all Open Water Diver trainees. This medical must be to Australian Standard 4005.1 – 2000 Training and certification of recreational divers – Part 1: Minimum entry level Scuba diving. The AS 4005.1 medical form is available from Ezidive.

Junior Divers

Queensland Workplace Health & Safety Diving Industry Code of Practice specifies a minimum age of 12 years. We are aware that SPUMS minimum age specification is 14 years. It would therefore appear that juniors between 12 and 14 years are approved at the examining Doctor’s discretion.

Certification issued to Junior Open Water Divers has the following limitations.

          1)     Maximum depth of 18 metres (same as Open Water Diver)

           2)    Must be accompanied by, a parent, guardian or PADI professional (Dive Master or Instructor) on all   dives.

Junior Open Water course is exactly the same as for normal Open Water course, once Juniors reach age 15 their Junior Open Water certification can be upgraded to Open Water with no additional training.

Ascent Rates

PADI’s maximum ascent rate is 18 metres/min. There is growing appreciation that that a safer maximum is 10 metres/min particularly in shallower water. Ezidive teaches an ascent rate of 10 metres/min.

Ascent training

The only ascent training exercises in the Open Water Diver course are:-

1)      Alternate Air Ascent where a student diver ascends while donating or receiving air from an alternate air second stage.

2)      Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (C.E.S.A). This is an out of air skill where the student diver ascends to the surface while continuously exhaling.

Both these ascents are conducted with the Instructor physically holding onto the student (Instructor has one hand on student’s equipment, other hand sliding along rope attached to weight on sea floor) to control ascent rate. Normally these skills would be conducted from a depth of 6 to 8 metres.
