The PADI Open Water Diver course covers all the basics of Scuba diving safely. This internationally recognized course qualifies a diver to dive independently (although always with a buddy), hire or buy equipment, obtain air fills and to participate as a certified diver on dive trips.
There are three sections to the course
Knowledge development. In this section you develop your knowledge of Scuba diving theory, equipment and practice, with a mixture of home study and group sessions.
Confined water dives. Here we teach you the skills that you will use over the rest of your diving career and have some fun too.

Open water dives. We take the skills you have developed in confined water further and add a few more. In each of the four dives we take some time out (where time/air supply permits) to have a look at the local underwater scenery, after all diving is about having fun not just learning skills.
We mix the Knowledge development and the confined water sessions so as to get you actually diving as soon as possible.

The course is performance, not time based, this means we don't go on to the next subject or skill until you have mastered the current one. If a particular skill takes a while, we will give you the attention you need until you have mastered that skill. Usually the course is conducted over two weekends with prior home study. The first weekend is a mix of Knowledge development and Confined water dives, on the second weekend we do two dives at Mackay on the Saturday and on the Sunday we dive coral reefs in a variety of locations. By the end of the course you will be competent in the skills and the knowledge required of a beginning Scuba diver. We suggest that you gain further experience preferably in the company of more experienced divers. |
Another way of gaining further knowledge and experience is to take the Advanced Open Water course. In this course you gain more knowledge (in a broad range of dive activities) and experience while in the company of an Instructor. Specialty courses offer an opportunity to develop special interests as well as refine your dive skills.
Can you do the course? Most people of average fitness have no trouble at all. A dive medical is required (covers ears, lungs and general fitness), an ability to swim 200 metres and tread water or float for ten minutes, if you can do these and you are 12 years of age or older you are away!
Cost including supply of your own PADI Open Water Diver Manual and RDP tables, use of all equipment and day boat trip $510.
Contact us a week or so before the advertised start date of course to allow yourself time for home study before the course starts.
